Welcome to the UKSAR Portal. This guide explains how to use the website and get the most from its features.

What is the UKSAR Portal?

The UKSAR Portal is an interactive map-based website that brings together information about search and rescue teams across the United Kingdom. It allows you to explore where teams are based, learn about the work they do, and see recent activity in one place.

Using the Interactive Map

The interactive map is the main way to explore the portal.

• Each marker on the map represents a search and rescue team or unit
• You can click on a marker to view more information about that team
• Zoom and pan the map to explore different regions of the UK

Activity indicators (RNLI only)

Some map icons change appearance to show recent activity:

• A flashing icon indicates an RNLI Lifeboat that has been tasked in the last 24 hours
• A red siren indicates a launch within the last hour

These indicators are designed to give a sense of current activity, not operational detail. We are working on bringing this functionality to other teams - watch this space.

Filtering Teams

If you want to find specific types of teams, you can use the filters provided on the site. Filters allow you to:

• Focus on particular types of search and rescue teams
• Reduce map clutter when viewing busy areas
• Quickly locate teams relevant to your interest

Apply or remove filters at any time to change what is shown on the map.

Viewing Team Information

When you click on a team on the map, you'll be shown an information panel for that team. Depending on what has been provided, this may include:

• Team name and location
• The type of search and rescue work they carry out
• Links to the team's website or social media pages

Information is provided to help increase understanding and visibility of teams, rather than as an operational reference.

Adding a Missing Organisation

The UK search and rescue community is wide and constantly evolving. If you notice that an organisation is missing from the portal, you can help improve coverage.

• Use the "Add Organisation" option in the main navigation
• Provide the requested details so the organisation can be added to the map
• Choose whether you'd like to manage the organisation once approved

This free registration is for rescue teams, SAR charities, and volunteer groups.

Claiming an Organisation

If you are involved with a particular organisation that's already on the portal, you can claim it. This is available through the Team Manager menu if you have an account. Claiming an organisation allows team members or representatives to:

• Update and maintain their organisation's information
• Ensure details remain accurate and current
• Represent their organisation appropriately on the site

This helps keep information reliable and reduces the need for third-party updates.

UKSAR Portal is designed for:

• Members of the public wanting to learn more about UK search and rescue
• SAR volunteers and team members
• Professionals with an interest in emergency response

The portal is informational, not an emergency or tasking system.
